DOLPHIN, WHALE WATCHING AND SEALS
With over sixty bottlenose dolphins living in the Bay you are sure to have a close encounter on one of the boats cruising Jervis Bay. Whale Watching is a newer activity in the area with sightings most often in June-July and October-November. Jervis Bay was once home to a whaling industry so hopes are high that visits will become more regular as whale numbers increase. Large numbers of seals live around the southern headland to the Bay and Cruise boats now visit these sites.

ABORIGINAL HERITAGE
 |
Jervis Bay contains a number of important archaeological sites, some of special significance to the local Aboriginal communities. There are many middens along the foreshores and the information centre at the entrance to Booderee National Park is a good starting point for information about the aboriginal history of the area and details about any information walks and bush tucker tours.

CAPE ST GEORGE LIGHTHOUSE
|
The ruined lighthouse set on imposing cliffs on the southern headland of Jervis Bay serves as a reminder of early European occupation. Said to have been located at the wrong spot, the lighthouse was erected in 1859 and is similar to Francis Greenway's famous South Head Lighthouse in Sydney.
The lighthouse was deliberately destroyed early this century by a naval bombardment because it was felt to be a navigational hazard. The replacement lighthouse at the northern headland, Point Perpendicular was built in 1899, converted to electric power in 1964 and has itself been replaced by an unmanned lighthouse on the same site.

BOWEN ISLAND

Set in the entrance to Jervis Bay, Bowen Island is home to the most northern fairy or Little Penguin rookery. The island also has a significant Shorter bird population who nest in the sedge scrub land.
Access to the island is very tightly controlled but the penguins can be seen all around the Bay during their fishing trips.
